Know Your Shit

If this comes as a surprise to you…You need a manager that knows all of this that will represent you with professionalism. If you are a manager and you didn’t know any of this you may have ruined someone’s chances to be heard or better late than never.

It is the Artist and or Manager’s responsibility to do your homework. The process of shopping music and artist is very similar to applying for an Executive Position for a Large Corporation. Your chances of being picked out of thousands of applicants are greater when you are prepared to win.

PSA: Artist Managers

How to reach your goals

You must have an effective plan or strategy. Spamming people’s emails, Twitter Direct Message or Facebook Inbox, in the music industry and every other industry is annoying. This form of engagement will more than likely be considered selfish and inconsiderate on your part.

PROFESSIONALISM IS A MUST

Be business conscious and professional if you want to be viewed as a professional. What ever you do don’t say, “Check this out”, “Check out”, “Halla at me”, “This is hot”, or any of the other slang words you use with your friends or relatives. Be mindful that this is a business contact. Be yourself but the professional version of you! Avoid being phony people can easily spot an ass kisser and it’s annoying.

Don’t send Mp3 Versions of recordings to anyone if at all possible but especially not radio stations or reps.

Be Mindful or knowledgable that DJs don’t have that much power like they use to. Major Radio Stations are either owned or are partly controlled by the Large Corporate Record Labels. Which means they spend most of their airtime pushing their artist and people within their network.

In any case DJs are required to play music of a certain standard of quality on the air. Be aware Mp3 Versions are sometimes acceptable to send in an email if requested but music is lesser quality and do not make you look professional. Save those Mp3s for after you have built a relationship and the person request more music from you.

What does recording companies do?

What does recording companies do?

You might be tempted to assume that all recording companies just record and publish music! But is it ever safe to assume? Hardly ever. Some things are self explanatory but this is not one of those things. There are many myths and misconceptions associated with record labels. Read this article to be in know.

Did you knowDo you know what a Record Label is or what they do? Did you know that some record labels do the same thing, but operate differently? Did you know there are difference types of Recording Companies? You may have assumed all record labels only create music, and sign musicians and artists to contracts to further their careers, but that is a misconception. Record Labels are involved in many aspects of entertainment including representing book authors, actors, comedians, dancers, movie and television productions, broadcasting, in addition to other industries unrelated to entertainment or art such as technology.

Definition from wikipedia

A record label is a brand or trademark associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. Often, a record label is also a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of new artists (“artists and repertoire” or “A&R“); and maintains contracts with recording artists and their managers. The term “record label” derives from the circular label in the center of a vinyl record which prominently displays the manufacturer’s name, along with other information.[1]

360 Contract

Definition from wikipedia

What does nonprofit mean?

What does not-for-profit mean?

Today’s society rely heavily upon “Google” to research and gather information. It’s an amazing thing to have the answers at  the tip of your fingers. However, there is a lot of wrong or incomplete information on the internet. We “Googled” this question “What does nonprofit mean?” and this was the first answer provided in the search query

Nonprofit Definition – “not making or conducted primarily to make a profit”

define, definition, meaning, informationThe purpose of a definition is to make an understand of the meaning of a word clear. This answer is not wrong, but it is incomplete and uses words to define “nonprofit” that would give people the wrong understanding. Specifically the words, “not making” and “profit”. Most people who are not knowledge of business terms, and would assume this means “not making a profit” when in fact the word “primarily” is included in this sentence as well as “conducting”. “Primarily Conducting” are the most important words in this definition but they are the least important to someone who don’t understand their meaning as it relates business structure. Let’s break this down to lay-mens terms, shall we.

Nonprofit, Not-for-profit, Charity as it relates to business structure would better be defined as such, “A company or group which uses the majority of it’s income, assets, or revenue for the benefit of the community in which it serves.”

Comparison scenario: A for profit company, corporation, organization, is legally allowed to sell shares of their company. A for profit company can legally use any income acquire for their personal benefit. These are actions that are strictly forbidden by nonprofit executives and carry a legal penalty for violations of Federal Laws of Compliance governing nonprofit organizations. There are different types of nonprofits that are allowed to operate in different capacities but this is a basic rule of thumb for Federally Approved 501c3 Tax Exempt Public Charities.  Key word being “Public Charities”.

Public Charities are businesses and all businesses have to bring in revenue and staff employees. How they acquire revenue and in what portions is different but they all do.

Watch the video below for a brief but in-depth explanation of what it means to be a nonprofit/ not-for-profit, charitable corporation, foundation, group, or agency. The information provided in the video, includes excerpts by a Federally Certified Agent at the Internal Revenue Service (I.R.S.) which determines nonprofit status and governs their business activities.

Many Artists/Musicians quickly scroll past links to our company when they see the words NONPROFIT or CHARITY. The reason they do this is because they assume “This Company wants me to give them my music for free or work for free. They seldom stop to think, “Can this company help me?” People who are not artists think to themselves “I can’t sing so they definitely can’t help me.”  This is an assumption that could cost you. lol What we do at Real Raw Records
