Music Industry: Rules Of Engagement

Are You Following the Music Industry

Rules of Engagement?

Are you Reaching Out to Music Industry Influencers but you’re not getting anywhere?

Know Your Shit

If this comes as a surprise to you…You need a manager that knows all of this that will represent you with professionalism. If you are a manager and you didn’t know any of this you may have ruined someone’s chances to be heard or better late than never.

It is the Artist and or Manager’s responsibility to do your homework. The process of shopping music and artist is very similar to applying for an Executive Position for a Large Corporation. Your chances of being picked out of thousands of applicants are greater when you are prepared to win.

How to reach your goals

You must have an effective plan or strategy. Spamming people’s emails, Twitter Direct Message or Facebook Inbox, in the music industry and every other industry is annoying. This form of engagement will more than likely be considered selfish and inconsiderate on your part.

PROFESSIONALISM IS A MUST

Be business conscious and professional if you want to be viewed as a professional. What ever you do don’t say, “Check this out”, “Check out”, “Halla at me”, “This is hot”, or any of the other slang words you use with your friends or relatives. Be mindful that this is a business contact. Be yourself but the professional version of you! Avoid being phony people can easily spot an ass kisser and it’s annoying.

Don’t send Mp3 Versions of recordings to anyone if at all possible but especially not radio stations or reps.

Be Mindful or knowledgable that DJs don’t have that much power like they use to. Major Radio Stations are either owned or are partly controlled by the Large Corporate Record Labels. Which means they spend most of their airtime pushing their artist and people within their network.

In any case DJs are required to play music of a certain standard of quality on the air. Be aware Mp3 Versions are sometimes acceptable to send in an email if requested but music is lesser quality and do not make you look professional. Save those Mp3s for after you have built a relationship and the person request more music from you.

Lights Camera Action

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

SIMPLE FACTORS PROVOKE ACTION

WHAT TO CONSIDER:

WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO REACH… WHAT DO THEY LIKE?…

WHERE ARE THOSE PEOPLE CONSISTENTLY CONGREGATING?…

THINK ABOUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO REACH THOSE PARTICULAR GROUP OF PEOPLE!

LIGHTS!…..Many Artist, Businesses, and Journalist are not clear on who their audience is and why they buy.

Artist think they are selling their music to any and everybody.

Businesses think they can use demographics to target the buyers they are interested in marketing their product to.

Journalist are governed by the Editors that think they know who will be interested and what the trending news interest are.

Misconceptions are the greatest Deceivers of All Time

Experiences as well as statistics are unreliable sources for sound knowledge or wisdom concerning any given market.

There are certain principles that govern what people respond to and how they respond.

Here’s a Primary Example: Henry Ford the originator of the v-8 motor/engine had the idea to build an engine that cooled itself.

People in general and as a majority laughed at the idea of having a self propelled automobile.  Had you been alive at that time and heard of the idea you may have laughed at the idea too.  Now that the use of automobiles is in common use today, you may ask…Why did they laugh?

Here’s Why? The reason people rejected the new idea is… their minds had conformed to the common use of horse and buggy. People reject new ideas by default response.  Why? People in general are followers not leaders. Including those that appear to be leaders many of them in fact are nothing but followers.

Here’s are some examples: Venture Capitalist are investors and in todays society of capitalism it is a common practice to seek investments by way of searching for businesses that appear to be succeeding, or present an appearance of potential success. Followers/People are easily deceived by the appearance of success. Business owners approach investors for financial support and the capitalist decide on the venture based on articulate business plans and statistical data comprised by the sales or executive team of the company. There is a great element of Risk involved when using this approach to decide on investments so many capitalist pay costly, so called (Expert Advisers) that also are reliant upon unreliable sources demographics (census and past progress or lack of progress) Therefore many venture capitalist follow the same business model and strategy and in up investing in unproductive businesses and have to scramble to sell the company to recover loss or to prevent increased loss.

In the same regard Record Labels have a similar lack in strategy because they use A&Rs to search for talent and they all look in the same place and are seeking for the same elements that other labels are seeking for commercialized artist. They are followers of the the trends… Doing what everyone else is doing….”The same old same old!”

BORING! Trends are not lasting unless they are intentionally designed to do so! This is the grave mistake of most Labels and other businesses they ride on the wave of uncertain trends. People will buy and consume when their interest is peaked but loyalty is not a factor in impulsive purchases. Some companies maximize on the fact that people will at least try an item once but they don’t contemplate on are the draw backs of the after math. “Karma’s a Bitch”  An old wise parable says, “You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time” Revolution is inevitable!

The so called #NewTrend in Journalism is to find out what’s trending and report what everyone else is reporting just report it with a catchier title. What the Hell? That is not new, people in general have been followers.  That form of reporting is a race to see who can follow the most consistently.  lol BORING!

Consumers use to buy news papers and watch the news because they knew and relied upon the fact that reporters were required to go out there and get a #news worthy story.  Due to this requirement reporters/journalist were hungry and persistent to bring it!   Now they have all become followers of a story you heard already that might have been boring when the first person reported it! lol

Camera!

A true leader is not afraid of the camera. A true leader goes out front against the common flow of things to be seen and judged.  A true leader is not afraid of criticism. A true leader paves the way. A true leader is a trend setter not follower!

Action!

A true leader cleaves to the art of innovation, set standards, create and set trends, and others follow suit, after the fact. Action!

Poem Titled: Trapped

Poem Title – Trapped©

I lay bound and conformed to a bed. Unable to move or barely breath. As I laid there, I fight, not to be trapped in the hollow shell of myself. Getting rid of myself. I thought to end it all but it isn’t my time to go. Trapped here, bound within myself, I fight to wake up from this night mare of me. Could I escape? I could escape from the illusion of being free but I could never escape the reality of being me.   trappedAwaken, but my eyes are still closed. I can see everything clearer but, who knows. I resist and refuse to open them wide and allow the light to shine in, trapped in this shape I’m in.  Fighting but losing a battle I could never win. No where can I go without me I’m trapped in this skin. Over and over and time and time again. When at last the release of this grip.  A sense of joy washed over me and into peace I slip. Trapped in another world I could never break free. Silly, so you say, but I was just being me. Trapped here in the bed of my soul just as FREE TO BE ME AS I PLEASE. Bound not confound in a state of being of who I am trapped but not held down. I enjoy being trapped and don’t desire to be unleashed or unwound!

Proper management

What is Proper Management?

Article Written By Brettisha Jiles – Writer Creative Team Via Real Raw Records

Management in business and organizations is the function that coordinates the efforts of people to accomplish goal and objective by using available resources efficiently and effectively.  In order to properly manage this requires leaders to treat employee with respect.  Respecting people in general is a beneficial characteristic in life but it is a very useful mindset in business. Respect is necessary to fully understand that no matter what position in the company an employee holds, they all are important to collaborate the efforts for over all success of the company.  ProfessionalsManagement action shouldn’t make there employee feel that their opinion doesn’t matter especially if it could help achieve the over all goal that is set in place. For example a janitor could give a suggestion to place a rug at the entrance because he/she noticed the floor was very slippery when dry and people entering or exiting almost falling and hurting themselves. If the management ignores this suggestion it could result in someone being harmed and the company being sued for liability.

Communication is Important for Proper Management

Communicate with your team. As a manager, it is up to you to schedule a meeting to discuss  what kind of expectation is required of them. Your team are not mind readers.  They won’t be able to know what you want out of them until you tell them. In conjunction to communicating expectations, make sure your expectations are realistic. If you expect them travel to the moon without a way there, then you’re being unrealistic. Strictly BusinessRealistic and high expectations should coexist. Once you have communicated to your team what you expect from them, trust them to do it. Some bosses are guilty of delegating a task to their employees and then come and take over and perform the task given. This communicates to the worker, you do not have confidence in them to do the job. Many managers or business owners do this because they enjoy hogging credit for doing everything. Common bragging rights “I do everything”  “Do I have to do everything around here”

How to Accomplish Impossible Task

We all face problems and situations in life that seem impossible to remedy or accomplish. Certainly, we all would love to know how to accomplish those task that seem impossible. Obviously they wouldn’t be problems if we had the answers. So you ask how do I accomplish impossible task? Well, the first step to solving any problem is to…

Don't Give Up

FIRST STOP! Stop viewing it as a problem and determine that it is just a situation that you would like to resolve, accomplish or remedy. I used these three different words because problems have different angles of solution. There is not catch all remedy, answer, or resolve. However, there is a mind set that you can resort to that will clear your mind enough to come up with either. However, you would have to

FIRST STOP! Stop viewing the situation as a problem. Circumstances are just that, many times. What? CIRCUMSTANTIAL. I know what you are thinking by now. Why is she saying the same thing over and over? You said you were going to tell us how to accomplish impossible task. I was expecting for you to give me the answer to how I can solve my problem. The answer is very simple. You have not realized that I have already given you the answer. You are still thinking the PROBLEM still needs to be solved, but it should have STOPPED being a problem and became a situation or circumstance in the second paragraph.

NOTE: To self you can’t give instructions to a student who is not willing to follow instructions! Stop Trying it’s an impossible task to accomplish!

IF YOU’RE LIKE A LOT OF SONGWRITERS and composers, you’re probably wearing many hats in your home studio—writing, producing, recording, and mixing your own work. But once the mix is done, there’s one more stage: mastering.

Mastering plug-ins have become popular with home producers. But is it really something you should do yourself? A professional mastering engineer can listen objectively and also has a trained ear for what works on radio, on screen, or in whatever medium you plan to release. To get the most out of a mastering engineer’s talents, however, it’s important to prepare your mixes properly—and avoid the critical mistakes that can limit their ability to enhance your hard work.

For some insight, we turned to veteran mastering engineer Chris Athens. Before moving into his well-equipped home studio in Austin, Texas, Athens spent time at both Sony and Sterling Sound in New York City. His credits read like a who’s who across a wide variety of styles, ranging from Coldplay to AC/DC to the Beastie Boys and Notorious B.I.G.
